西方元旦的來歷
西元前46年，古羅馬凱撒把這一天定為西歷新年的開始，為了祝福Janus，這位羅馬神話中的門神，Janus后來也演化為英文一月January這個(gè)詞。原本以為教皇把耶穌誕生年作為西元元年，西元一月一日也和耶穌有關(guān)聯(lián)，現(xiàn)在看來并非如此。可能依照西方普遍信仰基督教，還應(yīng)該是12月25日耶誕日為過年，所以西方的新年沒有耶誕隆重。
大約在公元前五萬年左右，古埃及人已由游牧改為農(nóng)耕，定居在尼羅河兩岸，他們的農(nóng)業(yè)收成與尼羅河是否發(fā)生洪水有很大關(guān)系。古埃及人從長(zhǎng)期的觀察中發(fā)現(xiàn)，尼羅河泛濫的時(shí)間是有規(guī)律的，他們就把這個(gè)時(shí)間每次都記錄在竹竿上，從中得知兩次泛濫時(shí)間之間大約相隔365天;同時(shí)還發(fā)現(xiàn)，當(dāng)尼羅河初漲的潮頭來到今天開羅城附近的時(shí)候，也正好是太陽(yáng)與天狼星同時(shí)從地平線上升起的時(shí)候。于是，古埃及人便把這一天定為一年的開始。這是"元旦"最早的由來。
元旦是慶賀新年的開始，歡度元旦可說是世界各國(guó)各地區(qū)的普遍習(xí)俗。
現(xiàn)在，世界上大多數(shù)國(guó)家把每年1月1日作為元旦，由于世界各國(guó)所處的經(jīng)度位置不同，各國(guó)的時(shí)間也不同，因此，“元旦”的日期也有不同。如大洋洲的島國(guó)湯加位于日界線的西側(cè)，它是世界上最先開始新的一天的地方，也是最先慶祝元旦的國(guó)家。而位于日界線東側(cè)的西薩摩亞則是世界上最遲開始新的一天的地方。
阿富汗把春分作為元旦;猶太人把秋分作為元旦;而寒帶的愛斯基摩人的元旦是不固定的，他們把第一次下雨作為元旦。公元前46年，羅馬皇帝儒略·凱撒制定儒略歷，開始時(shí)他把冬至作為元旦。但是，人們堅(jiān)持要把朔日作為元旦，因此就把元旦延到冬至后10天。
按公歷計(jì)，我國(guó)是世界上第12個(gè)開始新年的國(guó)家。各個(gè)國(guó)家由于其歷史、文化、宗教信仰、民族習(xí)慣不同，也都有自己不同的慶祝。不過，這也使得這個(gè)世界多姿多彩，更顯地域、民族特色了。
