觀后感:罪惡之家
先說句BBC這版An Inspector Calls改編的播出日期選的真好:2015年是原劇首演70周年(1945在蘇聯(lián),1946在英國),9.13則是作者J.B. Priestley的誕辰(1894.9.13)。
這部電視電影是BBC推出的season of classic 20th-century literature系列第2部,其余三部分別是查泰來夫人的情人,The Go-between, Cider with Rosie。目前還沒有播完,大膽預(yù)測下這部將是4部中最受好評的一本戲。盡管如今我看劇更加挑剔,會留意畫面主角說話時背景里一眾人物各自在做什么,這部戲在這一點(diǎn)上也十分出色,每個角色的面部微表情,身體小動作,幾乎無懈可擊。除了三位老戲骨,幾位年輕演員的表演也深得我心,特別是女兒,她之前主演的蘇格蘭文藝片Shell我就很喜歡,不過那部是個悶片,情節(jié)臺詞都很簡單;這部里角色情感變化更豐富,才發(fā)現(xiàn)這姑娘表現(xiàn)力不錯。還有Eva的演員,看得出戲路很寬。
編劇Helen Edmundson是拿過許多獎的編劇,我很喜歡她這一版做出的改動。沒有看過其他版本改編,在此只與原作具體做個比較。
首先是臺詞精簡了許多,整部劇顯得更加流暢。這當(dāng)然一部分得益于影視作品比起舞臺劇天然的優(yōu)勢,許多情節(jié)可以用畫面來直接展示給觀眾,不必借由角色口述。另外再減掉多余的對白,對情節(jié)點(diǎn)到為止,不多做解釋。含蓄,然而觀眾也一看就懂。比如提到Daisy Renton這個化名時Gerald立刻有所反應(yīng),Sheila發(fā)現(xiàn)了他的異常并猜到發(fā)生了什么,然后爭執(zhí)了幾句就切入正題。原作中則是這樣的:
GERALD (pulling himself together) D'you mind if I give myself a drink, Sheila?
SHEILA merely nods, still staring at him, and he goes across to the tantalus on the sideboard for a whisky.
INSPECTOR Where is your father, Miss Birling?
SHEILA He went into the drawing-room, to tell my mother what was happening here. Eric, take the Inspector along to the drawing-room.
As ERIC moves, the INSPECTOR looks from SHEILA to GERALD, then goes out with ERIC.
Well, Gerald?
GERALD (trying to smile) Well what, Sheila?
SHEILA How did you come to know this girl — Eva Smith?
GERALD I didn't.
SHEILA Daisy Renton then — it's the same thing.
GERALD Why should I have known her?
SHEILA Oh don't be stupid. We haven't much time. You gave yourself away as soon as he mentioned her other name.
GERALD All right. I knew her. Let's leave it at that.
SHEILA We can't leave it at that.
GERALD (approaching her) Now listen, darling —
SHEILA No, that's no use. You not only knew her but you knew her very well. Otherwise, you wouldn't look so guilty about it. When did you first get to know her?
He does not reply.
Was it after she left Milwards? When she changed her name, as he said, and began to lead a different sort of life? Were you seeing her last spring and summer, during that time when you hardly came near me and said you were so busy? Were you?
繼續(xù)短暫爭論之后第一幕結(jié)束。第二幕岳母加入,再度反復(fù)爭論,主題一則是繼續(xù)解釋Gerald是如何露餡的,二則是勸說母親不要掙扎,督查對他們的底細(xì)一清二楚。比起電視劇中寥寥幾句臺詞,顯得有些多余。類似的改動還有不少,對比之下我更喜歡這版的節(jié)奏。
這一版最大的改動,是關(guān)于Goole的身份。
原作里相關(guān)的暗示,一個是Goole這個名字本身,音同ghoul,有鬼魂的意思(偏貶義);另外就是他預(yù)知未來的能力。因此關(guān)于Goole身份一直以來有諸多解讀:鬼魂,時間旅行者,上帝,上帝的使者等等。
而這一版的傾向則十分明顯,加入了開篇和尾聲時兩段關(guān)于上帝的對話,還有Eva死前他不為人知的陪伴,Birling一家甚至討論出Goold這個名字,這都是原作里完全沒有的`情節(jié)(編劇也是膽大,這個話題畢竟容易踩到一部分人的雷區(qū),沒準(zhǔn)還要連帶出類似預(yù)定論vs自由意志之類多數(shù)人都難以理解的矛盾話題。)這些改編與原作相比并沒有什么優(yōu)劣好壞的差別,但我個人更喜歡這個設(shè)定,覺得更加make sense。而blood, fire and anguish的預(yù)言,像是即將到來的硝煙戰(zhàn)場,更讓人想起啟示錄里的地獄烈火。
一個個體的不幸遭遇,不一定是罪有應(yīng)得;人類作為一個整體,才應(yīng)了那句自作孽不可活。
可嘆Goole對Birling一家的訊問,終究也未能帶來多少改變。原來當(dāng)時讓他們顫栗的并不是發(fā)覺自己竟與這樁慘劇有關(guān),而是丑聞斷了自己的仕途財路。一旦發(fā)現(xiàn)名聲并無威脅,他們頓時松了口氣,繼續(xù)談笑風(fēng)生。是啊,你是死是活,我反正沒有犯法。畢竟,我只是開的工資低了一點(diǎn),你愛做就做不做拉到,領(lǐng)頭反抗被我開掉那是理所當(dāng)然;我只是按規(guī)矩辦事,誰讓你要用那么圣母的理由,還膽敢冒用我的名字,我稍稍動用話語權(quán)無可厚非;我只是一時興起包養(yǎng)了你兩三個月,是你自己偏要走心,我給了你好幾個月的生活費(fèi)已是仁至義盡。人說無知者無畏,這群人倒真是“不知天命而不畏也”的生動寫照。
至于年輕一代,兒子雖有悔改之意,那句“我要找她”也來得太晚太晚。而女兒對女仆不再高傲的態(tài)度,也許是暗示她真心要有所改變吧,可是身為女性,她又能做什么呢?
可惜Eva在決意放棄的那一晚,她不曾知道,有一個身影默默守在她的窗下,有一雙眼睛看到她所有的不幸,有一雙手輕輕安慰她冰涼的遺體。那樣悲憫而哀傷的眼神,每次看到,都淚流滿面。
