Innovation and Leadership
Good morning, ladies and gentlemen. Thank you all. It is truly a great honor to stand before you here today as a speaker for the 20th anniversary of VIPP; and I’m delighted by the opportunity to share my experience with you.

With constant travel and learning, I have gained an It can be said that an open mind makes dreams come true. Now, it is possible for more opportunities for the fulfillment of their dreams.
One day five years ago, my daughter was playing in my office, and asked me, “Why are people working for you” I did not say, “To make money,” like many businessmen may have. I paused for a few seconds, and then answered, “They do it because I care for them, trust them, and respect them.” In fact, these are essential in the definition of true leadership: care, trust, and
respect.
Cohesion is critical. To lack any one of the three – care, trust or respect – negates the entire balance. Leadership is neither a science nor an art: it falls somewhere between the two. You can indicate leadership with some facts, numbers and data. However, this does not indicate the leadership skills essential to gain those results; just as a great artist can teach you the mechanics of painting, but the uniqueness of his work is from his soul, heart, and humanity.
The success of leadership may be measured by one’s ability to accept the hard work and responsibility associated with effective leadership, and the willingness of people to come together with that leader to work hard for, and achieve their common goal.
The leader’s innovation is the foundation I want to share a short story here. studying in the US in 2002, China encountered an unprecedented disaster, New Power School was in the critical stage of becoming established. down.
Pan Shiyi, Chairman of SOHO China
By Kevincucyb
Introduction
When talking about currency, you must have a long list in your mind of currencies in different countries such as US dollar, Singapore dollar, British pound and the like. All those currencies normally can only be issued by the authorities. However, when it comes to be the “Pan” Currency (Appendix 1), it was in fact issued by Pan Shiyi, Chairman of SOHO China.
Born in an impoverished rural village of north-western China in 1963, Pan
started his career from a research office in a small city named Langfang in China after he graduated from Hebei Technical College of Petroleum Profession in 1984. But after three years he abandoned the “iron bowl” in a public institution and started his own real estate trading business with several partners in Shenzhen, China’s first Special Economic Zone. In the year of 1995, he founded SOHO China with his wife Zhang Xin, which has already became the largest prime office real-estate developer in China (Silu, 2012).
ROLE MODEL & PR LEADER
Modern version of rags-to-riches success story
In China, Pan Shiyi's entrepreneurial accomplishments have led him widely seen as a modern day rags-to-riches success story. Born in an impoverished rural village in north-western China, Pan confessed in an interview with BUNDPIC.COM, that he used to see money as the most important thing in life when he faced great poverty as a teenager (Li, 2009).
"My love of money was extremely strong when I was about 18 or 19 years old. At that time my two sisters went off to college together, which caused some financial
difficulty for my family. My father was making RMB50 every month while my mother was paralyzed and could no longer work. I was afraid that my two
younger sisters might be looked down up on so that I always saved money and bought clothes for them. At that time, I thought money is the most important thing."- Pan Shiyi Starting from nothing, he later became one of the richest people in China. Pan’s success story inspires numerous people in China.
Unconventional leader and moral model
Most Chinese are regarded as free thinkers or communists by outsiders, but Pan has his own religious belief and it is so unique that most people had never heard of it before. It’s called Bahai, a monotheistic religion founded in 19th-century Persia, with the central theme that humanity is one single race and that the day has come for its unification in one global society. As one of the youngest of the world’s independent religions, it has over five million believers around the world in over 200 countries and territories(wikipedia, 2013). With the spirit of “unity” from his religion, he was also described as a role model both in his own blogs or media reports. And “honesty” was also one of the most labels on Pan. He regards "honesty, unity and innovation" as the culture and spiritual wealth of SOHO China. He emphasized “unity” and “honesty” quite frequently during his annual speech to the whole staff of SOHO China (Pan, 2010, 2012b).
He emphasized “honesty” particularly, both to himself, colleagues and his
partners in business. He claimed publicly that “Honesty is the most basic
requirements of the partners” (Pan, 2012a). Some of the staff in SOHO China was also dismissed because of dishonesty. Hu Dawei, former sales director of SOHO's Shanghai branch, was fired on December 2011 for allegedly cheating customers into buying apartments at a Shanghai project (Su, 2011). In response to the dismastment of Hu, Pan Shiyi posted on his personal weibo that “I am currently in Israel pilgrimage to Haifa. After reading all the materials (on Hu’s incident) sent by my colleagues from
China, I now more firmly believe that honesty is the foundation of all human virtues.” (Ma, 2011)
Unlike other traditional Chinese businessmen, Pan Shiyi often makes his
presence felt on TV, on the internet, in newspapers, advertisements and even in a film named "Aspirin". Pan Shiyi is a very active player in social media in China. He opened his personal blog on sina.com, China's leading internet portal in 2005. 18 months later, his blog had joined the top six among sina's 1 million bloggers, luring 34 million hits ("Chinese Entrepreneurs Special: Pan Shiyi," 2007). Besides, his weibo, the Chinese version of twitter, has over 14 million followers currently.
PR Leader - Story of “Pan” currency
The story behind the issue of Pan Currency particularly shows Pan’s ability to turn a public-relations stumble around. Shortly after Steve Jobs passed away in
October 2011, Pan said on his weibo that “the board of directors of Apple Inc. should make a decision that they should started mass production of iPhone and iPad at a much lower price under 1,000 RMB (around 157 USD) so that many more people could use Apple products, which could best commemorate the passing of Steve Jobs” (Appendix 2). This weibo attracted millions of comments and forwards, asking him to lower the price of his properties to 1,000 RMB per square meters to best
commemorate him when he died. Some talented weibo users designed a currency named “Pan” – with 1 Pan = 1,000 RMB/m2 (Lee & Tejada, 2011).
After realizing his post had raised too much anger by fans of Steve Jobs, he soon released another post on his weibo on the same day expressing his understanding of people’s complainments on housing price and showing his respect and admire to Steve Jobs. Quickly the first post was d from his weibo account.
However, this is not the end of the story. Several days later, Pan posted another weibo with sample designs of the “Pan” currency. The sample note looks suspiciously
like a Chinese 100-yuan note, though Pan Shiyi’s picture replaced Mao Zedong’s face picture in the front side. In the back of the note, it features a quote from the Bahai faith that “When a thought of war comes, oppose it by a stronger thought of peace. A thought of hatred must be destroyed by a more powerful thought of love”, which Mr. Pan prominently practices and preaches on Weibo from time to time. Besides, a picture of SOHO China’s building Wangjing SOHO was also showed in the back of the “Pan” note (Appendix 1).
The release of “Pan” currency was also a hit in weibo, thousands of weibo users forward the picture of it on line. SOHO China uses it as a gift sent to peoples who participated in their online activities. The popularity did not only exist in cyber world, Pan Shiyi said that after “Pan” currency’s release, he found almost everybody appeared to be laughing at him behind his back when he arrived at an airport ("Property tycoon mocked for own currency," 2011).
CONCLUSION
Pan Shiyi applies transformational leadership. His charisma derived from his ability to gain respect, trust and admiration. He advocates people of being honest, which in turn make his image as a very honest businessman. Besides, he is deeply involved in public welfare. He and his wife Zhang Xin, CEO of SOHO China,
launched SOHO China Foundation focusing on support education focused initiatives in China ("Pan Shiyi," 2011). All these factors make him a unique leader, which strongly raised my interest in analysing his leadership.

I have just been to Buckingham Palace where Her Majesty the Queen has asked me to form a new government, and I accepted.
In David Cameron, I follow in the footsteps of a great, modern prime minister. Under David's leadership, the government stabilized the economy, reduced the budget deficit, and helped more people into work than ever before.
But David's true legacy is not about the economy, but about social justice. From the introduction of same-sex marriage, to taking people on low wages out of income tax altogether.
David Cameron has led a one nation government and it is in that spirit that I also plan to lead. Because not everybody knows this, but the full title of my party is the Conservative and Unionist Party. And that word Unionist is very important to me. It means we believe in the Union. That precious, precious bond betweenEngland, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
But it means something else that is just as important. It means
that we believe in a Union not just of the nations of the United Kingdom, but between all of our citizens. Every one of us, whoever we are and wherever we are from.
That means fighting against the burning injustice that if you are born poor, you will die on average nine years earlier than others. If you're black, you're treated more harshly by the criminal justice system than if you are white.
If you're a white, working-class boy, you're less likely than anyone else in Britain to go to university. If you're at a state school, you're less likely to reach the top professions than if you were educated privately.
If you are a woman, you will earn less than a man. If you suffer from mental health problems, there's not enough help to hand. If you're young, you'll find it harder than ever before to own your own home.
But the mission to make Britain a country that works for everyone means more than just fighting these injustices.
If you're from an ordinary working-class family, life is much harder than many people in Westminster realize. You have the job, but you don't always have the job security.
You have your own home, but you worry about paying the mortgage. You can just about manage, but you worry about the cost of
living and getting your kids into a good school.
If you're one of those families. If you're just managing.I want to address you directly. I know you're working around the clock, I know you're doing your best, and I know that sometimes, life can be a struggle. The government I lead will be driven not by the interests of a privileged few, but by yours.
We will do everything we can to give you more control over your lives. When we take the big calls, we'll think not of the powerful but you. When we pass new laws, we'll listen not to the mighty, but you.
